What is Down Syndrome?
Down syndrome, also known as trisomy 21 is a genetic disorder. Down Syndrome effects the physical development of human body functionality and slows down the mental process and development. Trisomy 21 is an extensively common chromosome defect. This disorder is proven to be found in over 220,000 new borns world wide. [1] Furthermore, Down Syndrome is developed when a baby is born with 47 chromosomes in comparison to the normal child who receives 46 chromosomes. This is known as a random error in cell division that results in the presence of an extra copy of chromosomes [2] Down Syndrome is found in three different forms. Trisomy 21, being the most common genetic disorder where every cell contains an additional chromosome 21. Other types include; Mosaic and Translocation D.S These two types are however less common and significant in conjunction to Trisomy 21. |
